Granite is a strong stone because its mineral grains have grown tightly together during a very slow cooling period and the quartz and feldspar that compose it are harder than steel and also give the granite a light colour, ranging from pinkish to white. This lighter colour can also be punctuated with darker 'accessory' minerals giving the classic 'salt and pepper' look.
Over the course of history granite has been used in many forms of construction. The Red Pyramid of Egypt was so named because its surface was coated in a crimson granite and many large Hindu temples in southern India were built using the material.
Taking a good polish and resistant to weathering and wear and tear granite is most suitable for worktops and flooring with its high durability and aesthetic qualities.
Lennox Masonry have access to literally hundreds of styles and types of granite and limestone, too many to display on this site, so we advise clients to visit our works for a complete exhibition of samples and discuss your needs, designs and finishes with the experts.
